Fighting disease-causing bacteria is part of human history.<\/span><\/span> Now humanity is in danger of losing the battle again.<\/span><\/span> Since more and more bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics, there are too few new agents. <\/span><\/span>BILD explains the biggest medical threat in decades and what we can do about it. <\/span><\/span>President of the Paul Ehrlich Society for Infection Therapy, Mathias Pletz, warned this week that the effectiveness of antibiotics is increasingly threatened.<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Pletz literally: "We are currently in the process of losing the achievements of modern medicine and returning to the time before the discovery of penicillin."<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Is medicine really that bad? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, says microbiologist prof. Yvonne Mast, who is on <\/span><\/span> The Leibniz Institute DSMZ (German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures) researches: \u201cAntibiotics were<\/strong> the greatest medical achievement ever.<\/span><\/span> The fact that more and more resistance is emerging now and that there is a lack of new antibiotics is a big threat." <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A recent study calculated that more than 39 million people worldwide could die from infections with antibiotic-resistant germs by 2050!<\/span><\/span> I: In the European Union alone, 35,000 people die annually from infections caused by resistant pathogens.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why is there so much resistance? <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Intensive care doctor prof. Frank M. Brunkhorst <\/span><\/span>(Jena University Hospital) for BILD: "There are two main reasons: First, too many antibiotics are still prescribed, especially in outpatient settings.<\/span><\/span> Second: due to international travel, which is on the rise again after Corona, many resistant bacteria are coming to us.<\/span><\/span> Resistance rates are extremely high, especially in countries such as Greece, Portugal, Turkey, but also in India and other Asian countries.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

We have to warn people here: if someone brings such a germ from vacation and infects a sick grandfather, it can be life-threatening." <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In which cases are antibiotics often not needed? <\/span><\/span>For almost all respiratory infections.<\/span><\/span> They are usually caused by viruses against which antibiotics can do nothing.<\/span><\/span> Especially children with a cold they are given too much medicine.<\/strong><\/span><\/span> And also for urinary tract infections such as:<\/span><\/span> B.
