Who doesn't love fresh breath? According to the US Census and the Simmons National Consumer Survey (NHCS), 160.03 million Americans used chewing gum in 2020. That's a lot of chewing gum!
The chewing gum manufacturers of the world have made a huge impact on the human population.
But is this influence positive? We don't think so.
Unfortunately, most chewing gum on the market contains chemicals that cause cancer and can destroy your health.
How can this continue? Chewing gum that poisons the population One of the most dangerous substances in addictive chewing gum is aspartame. This sweet poison is better known as Equal and NutraSweet. Before you buy chewing gum - read the label. Aspartame consists of three harmful ingredients:
1. Aspartic acid – which is an excitotoxin that causes cell damage and death as it crosses the blood-brain barrier.
2. Phenylalanine – when combined with carbohydrates, aspartame causes excessive amounts of phenylalanine in the brain, which reduces serotonin levels leading to mental instability, such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.
3. Methanol – breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde when it reaches 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Since the body is normally set at 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, this chemical embalms all living tissue when it reaches 86 degrees. An unnecessary cancer-causing gum preservative may do more harm than good.
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are two common food additives. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a preservative that slows rancidity in certain types of food - usually fats, oils and foods containing oil. According to a nonprofit health advocacy organization called the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), BHT is an unnecessary additive that can easily be replaced with safer substitutes.
Replacing BHT with vitamin E or packing food (rubber) under nitrogen instead of air are alternatives that do not cause harm. CSPI also states that this synthetic chemical can simply be omitted.

Liver toxicity caused by a bleaching agent used in chewing gum

Used as a food coloring or bleaching agent, titanium dioxide has been shown in recent studies to cause a host of physical ailments. The Journal of Toxicological Sciences reports that this chemical induces an inflammatory response, hepatocyte apoptosis, and liver dysfunction. The study revealed changes in the expression of 785 genes associated with: andwith a munic and inflammatory response, Andpoptosis, onoxidative stress, mmetabolic process, onin terms of stress, cell cycle, pion transport, pcell proliferation and dcell differentiation.
In fact, long-term exposure to titanium dioxide results in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. A study published in the journal "Neurotoxicology"
this confirms and also states that human health hazards are associated with cellular uptake and internalization as well as accumulation within brain cells.
Titanium dioxide has the potential to “cause cerebral damage and neurodegenerative disease”. Conclusion? Don't waste your money: chewing gum really is a "silent" killer. Aspartame, BHT and titanium dioxide are just some of the dangerous ingredients in chewing gum. There are many more harmful chemicals. So if you must chew gum, make sure it's organic and non-GMO verified free of all harmful ingredients.
