Recent research suggests that kiwifruit may have a number of health benefits, one of which is key to recovery from (intense) exercise.

According to a study published in the journal Nutrients, elite runners who ate two kiwis a day for a month reduced oxidative damage from intense physical training. Athletes who routinely train at a high intensity usually take in a large amount of oxygen when they exercise, the nutritionist explained Matthew Kadey.

Although oxygen is necessary for muscle contraction, inhaling too much of the substance can also increase the number of free radicals in the body.

What is oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress can damage DNA over time, as well as essential fatty tissue and proteins in the body. This can lead to health problems, including hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and even Alzheimer's disease.

Oxidative stress can be caused by intense exercise, but also by consuming pesticides on fruits and vegetables, pollutants in the air, and even consuming foods that are rich in sugar, fat, and alcohol.

This is why it is crucial to eat foods rich in antioxidants to restore balance, and kiwi is rich in antioxidants. Eat this has listed several major health benefits why you should eat kiwi regularly.

In a study, researchers from Japan found that those who ate kiwi fruit twice a day reduced the harmful effects of exercise-induced oxidative stress by increasing antioxidant levels. Another study found that kiwi contains antioxidant properties that can fight against oxidative DNA damage. One study even suggests that the antioxidant and vitamin C present in kiwi can help treat asthma.
