Behind the scenes, the makeup industry is one of the most corrupt industries in the world; believe it or not, this entire industry is “shockingly unregulated[1].″ The chemicals women put on their faces today can be considered toxic; if you don't believe, see for yourself!
Some of the well-known, proven carcinogenic substances are used in the production of make-up. Many lipsticks contain heavy metals. Always check the ingredient declaration before buying your next lipstick. CEOs of makeup companies make billions of dollars a year at the expense of your health[2]. Of course, they are not the only ones who do this. Many of the corporations that control our food and water do the same so it is not unusual that cancer in general is on the rise. Are you aware of the fact that in the US there are almost no health regulations, and no special necessary health checks before their products hit the shelves[3]? Thus, greedy CEOs have a free hand, who can save millions of dollars at the expense of your health. Deodorants, foundations, powders, lipsticks and shampoos mostly use harmful chemicals.
The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) details - as follows on their website - 'who' is responsible for "safety" when it comes to cosmetics: Companies and individuals who manufacture or market cosmetics are legally responsible for ensure the safety of their products. Neither the law nor FDA regulations require special checks to prove the safety of individual products or ingredients. Cosmetic companies are under no legal obligation to share safety information about their products with the FDA. The FDA consistently advises manufacturers to use all necessary tests to ensure the safety of their products and ingredients. Companies can confirm this security in a number of ways. The FDA stated that "product safety can be adequately demonstrated: (a) by relying on already available data on toxicological testing of individual ingredients and on product formulations that are similar in composition to certain cosmetic products and (b) any additional toxicological and other testing that are appropriate in view of such already existing data and information." (Federal Register, March 3, 1975, page 8916).
Back in 2011, the Environmental Protection Group tested 49 makeup products to check levels of toxic metals[4]. What they discovered was astonishing. The fact is that almost all of the most popular makeup brands they have chosen have also been tested for highly toxic metals.
They examined the following:
- 5 pads;
- 4 powders;
- 4 correctors;
- 8 lipsticks or glosses;
- 5 blushes or bronzers;
- 7 mascaras;
- 2 eye pencils;
- 14 eyeshadows.
Of these different products, they listed in their findings the ones that are considered the most toxic, because they contained the most toxic metals. It is important to note that over 90 percent of these products they tested contained lead-based ingredients, and up to 90 percent contained beryllium-based ingredients. Other heavy/toxic metals were also present, in about 60 percent or less of the products, which is still a lot.
For example, it is in these findings Benefit Benetint Pocket Pal (red shade) was positive for all the metals it was tested for, while Urban Decay XXX Shine Cooling lip gloss (Boys love Betsey) was positive only on three out of eight. This may not have been a very comprehensive study, but there was plenty of other research on the subject that was really needed. It should also be noted that Dr. Ken Spaeth of the North Shore LIJ Health System in the Great Neck (New York) area, speaking to CBS News[5] said that pregnant women are at increased risk from these metals found in lipsticks. This is because they could potentially cause neurological and cognitive problems for the developing fetus.
If we go back to 2010, FDA[6] cooperated with Frontier Global Sciences INC, to determine how much lead is in the lipsticks we find on our retail store shelves. Although awareness is growing, the FDA still sees no cause for concern, even though they found the amount of lead to be at least twice as high as their initial results.
It is important to note that lead accumulates in our body over time, so if we apply makeup that contains lead every day, we increase this exposure. Even small amounts of lead[7] can significantly contaminate us over time.
In connection with the above FDA findings, 10 lipsticks were found to be particularly problematic, as they contained the most lead compared to the others.
According to FDA findings, the 10 lipsticks that contain the most lead compared to others are:
- Maybelline Color Sensational – Pink Petal, contains 7.19 ppm (parts per million);
- L'Oreal Color Riche – Volcanic, contains 7.00 ppm;
- NARS Semi-Matte – Red Lizard, which contains 4.93 ppm;
- Cover Girl Queen Collection Vibrant Hues Color – Ruby Remix, contains 4.92 ppm;
- NARS Semi-Matte – Funny Face, contains 4.89 ppm;
- L'Oreal Color Riche – Tickle pink, contains 4.55 ppm;
- L'Oreal intensely moisturizing lipstick – Heroic, contains 4.41 ppm;
- Cover Girl Continuous Color – Warm Brick, contains 4.28 ppm;
- Maybelline Color Sensational – Mauve Me, contains 4.23 ppm;
- Stargazer lipstick 103 C, contains 4.12 ppm.
