Most people who consume fast food are aware that it is not good for them. Fast food is notoriously high in fat, sodium, processed carbohydrates and calories. However, what consumers may not be aware of is that these foods also have high content of harmful chemicals called phthalates. A study by the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health found that those who eat fast food are exposed to harmful chemicals in addition to other known health hazards of that food. The study was published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Researchers found that people who ate large amounts of fast food had the highest levels of phthalates in their bodies, as much as 40 percent more than those who did not eat fast food.

Fast food warning: phthalates linked to cancer, reproductive system problems

Phthalates belong to a class of chemicals used in food packaging, as well as in the production of fast food. These toxic substances have been linked to many serious health problems in adults and children – including prostate cancer, breast cancer and damage to the reproductive system. Studies have shown that these harmful chemicals are prone to leaching from plastic food packaging and contamination of the food in it, making processed food even worse. The individuals studied provided detailed information about what they had eaten in the past 24 hours. They also provided a urine sample to be tested for two specific phthalates: DiNP and DEHP.

Problems with hormones and children's development

New data shows that the hormone-disrupting chemicals phthalates are still widely present in the bodies of women of reproductive age.  Phthalates block the male hormone testosterone, which boys need in the womb to fully develop as men. Studies have also shown that prenatal exposure to phthalates can also harm the healthy development of the female reproductive system and the behavior, IQ, and learning abilities of boys and girls. Last Thursday, another study was published that showed that when pregnant women have more phthalates in their bodies, they produce less of the hormones their babies need to develop a healthy reproductive system.

Processed meat and carbohydrates are the biggest health risk

Meat and grains contributed the most to phthalate levels. Grain products include bread, pizza, cakes, rice dishes, burritos and noodle dishes. Other studies confirm the consumption of highly processed grains as a major source of harmful exposure to chemicals that leach into food. Researchers have discovered what we all know – on a common sense level. The more we eat fast food, the more toxic we become. In fact, DEHP levels were almost 24 percent higher and DiNP levels were up to 40 percent more in those who eat fast food. In addition to food packaging materials, phthalates have been found in a disturbingly large number of products, including some perfumes and even children's toys. In 2008, the use of phthalates in the production of toys was banned.

Bisphenol A is another major health problem

Bisphenol A or BPA, another common food packaging material, was also found in the study participants. This chemical has been linked to a number of health and behavioral problems, especially in young children. Although there was no association between the amount of fast food eaten and BPA, people who consumed fast food meat products had higher levels of bisphenol A than those who said they did not eat fast food. This information should be cause for great concern regarding the continued use of phthalates in food processing. It is clear that these chemicals are leaking from parts of the packaging and into the food that many people eat. And, without a doubt, fast food is one of the worst food choices. Consumers now have more reasons than ever to avoid fast food and other processed products. To reduce exposure to phthalates and bisphenol A and increase health, give preference to natural, organic foods with as little processing as possible.

Get a good sweat

A healthy lifestyle, as well as sweating, has been proven to help flush out chemicals such as phthalates found in many shampoos, heavy metals such as arsenic and mercury, which we can pick up from food and the environment. Most of you don't currently have access to a Finnish sauna, but even a good workout will help you sweat well and flush out bad substances from your body.

A study published in 2011 reported 66% lower urinary BPA levels in people who avoided all packaged foods for three days. Nowadays, it is certainly difficult to avoid all packaged food, but here the importance of moderation as one of the principles of proper nutrition is emphasized. Let's keep in mind where these compounds come from and try to think about reducing the consumption of products packed in plastic packaging and cans. Furthermore, a Korean study on a small number of women showed that wheatgrass powder (click for more about it HERE) can help the body deal with BPA due to its high antioxidant potential, and through its effect on the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of this toxin.

Do a bowel detox once or twice a year to reduce the intake of toxins that surround us.
