Wild garlic scientifically known as bear's garlic, wild garlic, broadleaf garlic, wild garlic, bear's leek, gypsy onion, pig's garlic and wild leek is a wild relative of chives. It is part of the large Amaryllidaceae family, represented by 59 genera and over 850 species worldwide. As a member of the Allium genus, wild garlic is closely related to plants such as onions (Allium cepa), garlic (Allium sativum), leeks (Allium ampeloprasum) and chives (Allium schoenoprasum). Its botanical name, Allium ursinum, comes from the Latin word ursus, meaning bear. It is called bear's garlic because it is a real spring treat for bears that have just woken up from their winter sleep. The plant is native to moist, shaded forests in Europe and northern Asia. Wild garlic is an attractive perennial that blooms in spring and can be grown for both ornamental and culinary purposes.

History

The 1st-century Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides noted this in his five-volume herbal encyclopedia, describing its effectiveness for cleansing and detoxifying the body. During the Middle Ages, King Charlemagne of present-day France classified the plant in his Capitulare de Villis imperialibis, a guide that highlighted the medicinal properties of common herbs. In 1992, the Society for the Protection and Research of the European Flora declared wild garlic the plant of the year.
